AIST was established by
Lori Collins, Ph.D.,
and Travis Doering, Ph.D, Anthropology faculty. Each had successfully
used various cutting-edge and conventional high definition survey techniques in
their separate research projects. Then, in 2005, they worked together on a stage
of the Miami Circle Project where they recognized the effectiveness, efficiency,
and economy of integrating the various technologies they had been using individually.
They realized that the combination of these technologies produced results that were
far greater than the sum of their discrete parts.
Each drew on their experience and fields of expertise, Collins in Florida and Doering
in Mesoamerica. They conducted a series of archaeological and heritage preservation
projects with researchers from other national and international universities as
well as private, public, and government sector partners.
It was also apparent to Collins and Doering that applications for these integrated
technologies extended beyond the domain of heritage conservation and cultural preservation.
They introduced their ideas and technologies to researchers in other disciplines
at USF including architecture and community design, transportation, graphic studios,
geography, and geology. As a result, a number of collaborative projects are now
in various stages of planning and completion.
